Description
Bought in 1999 by RMIT University, this fabulous cinema and office block was designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin. It opened in 1924 and the Capitol cinema today is considered the finest interior design work by this talented couple.
The Capitol Theatre is an extraordinary ‘picture palace’, with ceilings indirectly lit in four colours. The lighting was used in conjunction with the original orchestral scores in the early silent film era, to add drama for the filmgoer. It remains a spectacular sight.
Tours run on the third Friday each month. During term-time, you may see students from RMIT University, attending lectures in the impressive auditorium.
