Description
Originally designed for the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880, the Exhibition buildings and the surrounding Carlton Gardens are now World Heritage listed. Features include: the elaborate Hochgurtel fountain and the circular French Fountain; plantings in honour of the Dalai Lama; avenues of mature trees and flower beds; two ornamental lakes created for the 1880 exhibition; the Melbourne Museum and the Lie of the Land sculptural installation at its entrance; the Royal Exhibition Building; remnant pieces of stone from the Colonial Square building (built in 1896, demolished in 1960); the Carlton Gardens Tennis Courts; a children's playground; and the Moreton Bay Fig trees where local aboriginals have traditionally met and socialised.
